Location & Accessibility
Yala National Park is located in southeastern Sri Lanka, covering parts of the Hambantota and Monaragala districts. It is accessible by car or organized safari tours, with main entrances at Palatupana and Katagamuwa. Parking is available near entrance points.
Historical & Cultural Significance
Declared a national park in 1938, Yala is one of Sri Lanka’s oldest protected areas. The park also contains ancient Buddhist ruins, reflecting the link between wildlife conservation and cultural heritage.
Key Features & Attractions
Yala is renowned for one of the highest leopard densities in the world. Visitors may also see elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, deer, and many bird species across forests, grasslands, lagoons, and coastal landscapes.
Best Time to Visit
February to July is ideal, especially for early morning or late afternoon safaris.
